JACKSON - Millsaps freshman Margaret Eggers scored her second goal of the season by way of a header in the 55th minute, but it was Kelsey D'Amore who scored both goals for visiting Austin College to help the 'Roos to
a 2-1 road win Friday night.
With the loss, Millsaps fell under the .500 mark for the first time since Sept. 23, 2007 at 7-8-3 overall and 1-6-2 in league play. Austin College improved to 10-5-2 and 4-4-1 in the SCAC to move into 5th place in the conference standings.
In a very quiet first half, D'Amore broke open a scoreless tie in the 20th minute with a goal from 20-yards out, beating Millsaps GK
Sarah Nelin in the lower left corner.
The Majors managed just two shots in the opening 45 minutes, but had their best shot at tying the game at one apiece when
Leslie Robichaux banged a shot off the crossbar just before the halftime buzzer.
AC wasted little time increasing its lead, scoring their second goal just 1:33 into the second half when D'Amore sailed a shot into the Millsaps box from 35-yards out that fell in the back of the net over Nelin.
Millsaps, however, kept its cool and found its first goal less than 10 minutes later.
Emily Townsend took the Majors' corner kick and put it on the numbers to Eggers, who beat Kaitlin Elledge with her head to cut the lead to 2-1.
A final surge from Millsaps in the closing 3 minutes fell just short, as the Majors drew three consecutive corner kicks but couldn't find the equalizer.
Hayley Nemeth's shot in the 89th minute dribbled just wide left of the goal to close the books.
Millsaps will close out the 2009 season Sunday, playing host to the University of Dallas. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Harper Davis Field as part of Senior Day.
