PINEVILLE, La. – Powered by senior
Leslie Robichaux's two goals, the Millsaps College women's soccer team opened up the 2009 season with a 3-0 victory over the Louisiana College Wildcats on the road.
Robichaux wasted little time in putting the Majors ahead, scoring in the fifth minute and again in the 18th. Sophomore
Jessica Harris added another insurance goal in the first half, which was more than enough for junior goalkeeper
Sarah Nelin to protect.
The Majors came out of the gates with intensity as they pressured the WIldcats' defense and goalkeeper Emily Breaux with an early corner kick. Less than a minute later, at the 4:45 mark, Robichaux scored on the first shot of the game with an assist credited to freshman
Margaret Eggers for her first career point.
Millsaps continued the attack and Robichaux again found the back of the net at 17:21 of the first half, with Harris recording the assist. Harris rounded out the scoring for the Majors with an unassisted goal at the 21:10 mark for her first goal of the season.
In the second half, the Majors continued to sustain pressure, but were unable to get a shot past the Wildcats' Breaux. Nelin made her only save of the match in the second half to preserve the shutout for Millsaps. The Majors fired a total of 26 shots, which forced Breaux to make 10 saves. The Majors also dominated the WIldcats in the corner kick department by a total of 11-0.
Up next for the Millsaps women's soccer team is a home contest on Sunday, Sept. 6, against East Texas Baptist University. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Harper Davis Field.
