Major Women Fall to West Alabama in Season-Opener
Match Stats

JACKSON –
Allison Zakaras and Lauren Williams each claimed three-set wins as the Millsaps College women’s tennis team opened the 2010 spring season against the University of West Alabama, a Division II opponent, but fell 7-2.

West Alabama easily took all three doubles points to take an early 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

With the Tigers’ top player forced to pull out of her singles position, the others played up one position and the Majors took advantage.

Zakaras lost the first set 6-2 at the No. 1 position before rallying to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 to give Millsaps its first point.

Playing No. 2 singles, Williams won the first set 6-2 before her opponent won the second set 7-5 forcing a decisive third set which Williams won 6-4.

West Alabama swept through the No’s 4-6 singles positions to come away with the 7-2 victory.

“Our team is vastly improved and will look to get everyone healthy and start winning some matches,” head coach Jay Pacelli said. “Good victories by two of our top players in Allison and Lauren.”

Up next for the Majors is a pair of home matches next Saturday against Northeast Mississippi CC and Meridian CC with play beginning at 9 a.m.
