CLINTON –
Senior Jennifer McKinley had a career-day for the Millsaps College softball team by going deep three times in a 7-1 victory over No. 10 ranked and previously unbeaten Mississippi College but the Majors could not keep the momentum falling to Huntingdon College 6-5 later Friday afternoon.

McKinley becomes the first Millsaps player to hit three home runs in a game finishing the opening game 3-for-3 with five RBIs.

Emily Spicer started the game with a double to left center and later scored on a Lady Choctaws’ error before McKinley hit a two-run home run to center field to give the Majors an early 3-0 lead.

Millsaps would add a run in the third with a solo shot from McKinley to go ahead 4-0.

Starting pitcher Kasey Thibodeaux cruised through her first three innings of work allowing just two hits before MC finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth trailing 4-1.

The Majors responded by scoring two in the top of the fifth when McKinley again went deep driving home Brooke Lee for a 6-1 advantage.

Laura Litton joined the attack with a deep blast to straight away center field as the Majors shut down the Lady Choctaws 7-1.

As a team, Millsaps finished the game with four home runs for the first time in over a decade.

Thibodeaux was stellar in the circle for the Majors giving up just one run off six hits while striking out five to earn the victory and improve to 2-3 on the year.

Kim Mason took the loss for MC allowing four runs –three earned—in 2 1/3 innings of work and falls t 5-1 on the season.

Coming off its most impressive victory in recent history, the Majors could not put up a repeat performance against Huntingdon, falling 6-5.

Millsaps again got things started early by scoring two runs in the first inning as Allison Tarbox doubled home McKinley and Megan Yglesias before Josie Matthews was thrown out at the plate.

Huntingdon answered right back tying the score 2-2 in the bottom of the first off starter Brittney McAllister.

Spicer gave the Majors a 3-2 advantage in the second driving home LeAnn Williams with a single.

The Hawks would rebound to take a 4-3 lead with two runs in the third inning taking advantage of two walks and a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, it was the Majors who reclaimed a 5-4 lead when Yglesias brought home Lee and Spicer with a two-run single.

Head coach Roland Rodriguez turned to Thibodeaux for the sixth inning with a one-run lead but Huntingdon scored the tying run on a Millsaps error before taking a 6-5 lead on a wild pitch.

The Majors had a chance to score in the sixth but stranded McKinley at first base as the Hawks closed out the game for the 6-5 victory.

Thibodeaux took the loss for Millsaps allowing two unearned runs while Kayla Bratcher earned the complete game win.

McKinley led the Majors offensively for the day finishing 5-for-7 from the plate with five RBIs while Spicer went 4-for-8 on the day with one RBI.

With Friday’s split, Millsaps moves to 2-6 on the year and will be back in action Saturday when they face Huntingdon at 11:00 a.m. and Mississippi College at 3:00 p.m. The Hawks and Lady Choctaws will do battle around 1:00 p.m.
