JACKSON – The Millsaps College softball team split a pair of games Saturday defeating Huntingdon College 8-2 before falling to No. 10 ranked Mississippi College 7-4 in six innings as the game was called due to darkness.
The Majors stranded 20 base runners in the two games and still managed to score 12 runs on 23 hits.
In the opening game against Huntingdon, Millsaps walked the bases loaded in the second inning but a great defensive play on a line-drive by
Laura Litton kept the Majors off the scoreboard.
The Hawks could not keep Millsaps scoreless for long as
LeAnn Williams doubled down the left field line in the third and later scored on a single by
Josie Matthews.
Megan Yglesias proceeded to drive home Matthews with an RBI double as the Majors took a 2-0 lead through three innings.
Emily Spicer added an RBI single in the fourth before Huntingdon got on the board with a run in the fifth.
Millsaps would respond in the bottom of the fifth when
Brooke Lee singled home Yglesias to go ahead 4-1.
The Majors would break the game open in the sixth when
Allison Tarbox belted a two-run home run to left field as they claimed an 8-1 lead.
Huntingdon scored on a run-down as the final out was recorded in the seventh as Millsaps bounced back from a loss to the Hawks on Friday with the 8-2 victory.
Senior
Kasey Thibodeaux started for the Majors and kept the Hawks’ hitters at bay allowing just two runs on four hits –one for extra-bases—while striking out six in seven innings of work in the opening game.
Thibodeaux started the next game with Mississippi College but did not fare as well allowing five first-inning runs to the Lady Choctaws.
The Majors would get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Tarbox hit a two-run double.
MC would score one in the second and one in the third before
Jennifer McKinley led the bottom of the third with a solo home run, her fourth against MC on the weekend, to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Matthews added an RBI double in the fourth but it was not enough as the Majors stranded 11 runners against a tough defensive team in the Lady Choctaws and fell 7-4.
Chances were there for the taking as Millsaps left the bases loaded in the third and left two runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Thibodeaux settled-in after a rough start and shut down MC’s hitters for the rest of the game to give Millsaps a chance at the comeback.
The Majors, now 3-7 overall, will be back in action at home as Rust College travels to Jackson for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
