JACKSON – Jake Mills drove
Jules Roussel home with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 7-7 tie as the Millsaps College baseball team slipped past visiting Illinois Wesleyan University Tuesday night at Twenty Field, 8-7.
Roussel hit a deep drive to the fence in left center and was aggressive on the bases to beat the throw to third base setting up the go-ahead run before Mills promptly drove him home with a single over the head of the second baseman.
Boomer Hudson shut down the Titans in order in the ninth and picked up the win after pitching the final 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen allowing only one hit to improve to 3-1 on the year.
The Majors got the scoring started early taking advantage of two Titans’ errors in the first inning to open a 2-0 lead.
Millsaps added to its lead with two runs in the third as Roussel doubled-home
Will Hawkins before scoring on a wild pitch for a 4-0 advantage.
The Titans would not be outdone and quickly tied the game 4-4 in the top of the fourth highlighted by a three-run home run by Kevin Callahan off starter
Shelby Robertson, who threw 6 2/3 innings giving up six runs while scattering eight hits.
The Majors answered with two in the bottom half of the inning to regain a 6-4 lead as
Trey Rountree and
Drew Leonard scored on throwing errors by the catcher while stealing third base.
After a sacrifice fly by
Wes Perkins increased the lead to 7-4, the Titans got one back in the sixth before tying the game 7-7 with two runs in the seventh.
With two outs and two runners on base, Hudson entered the game and struck out the pinch hitter to end the threat.
The combination of Roussel and Mills finished a perfect 6-for-6 from the plate in the game and connected for the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Majors held on for the non-conference victory, 8-7.
Despite committing four errors, the Millsaps defense was spectacular highlighted by a diving catch by
Jeremy Aliff that showed off his range in center field and a great individual effort by Rountree to dive and stop a groundball up the middle before recovering to throw out the runner at first.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow evening at Twenty Field beginning at 5 p.m.
