JACKSON – The Millsaps College softball continued to score runs with ease in a doubleheader sweep against visiting Rust College on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 18-1 and 12-0 with both games ending after five innings.
Game one started with the Majors taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning behind two-run doubles from
Josie Matthews and
Morgan Ladner and an RBI single by
Megan Yglesias.
The Lady Bearcats answered with their only run in the four-game series when Chelsey Gunter blasted a line-drive over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Millsaps would build on its lead in the second with six runs highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of
LeAnn Williams.
In the third Matthews opened the scoring with a two-run home run and
Brooke Lee tripled before stealing home as the Majors led 15-1 after three innings of play.
Jennifer McKinley hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth as Millsaps closed out the game 18-1.
After McKinley’s home run on Saturday against No. 10 ranked Mississippi College, she passed Robin Rockco for the most home runs in a career by a Millsaps softball player with her 20th career round-tripper.
She also ranks tied for second in SCAC history with 23 home runs, behind only Rhodes College’s senior Rebekah Moore who currently has 24.
Brittney McAllister recorded the victory in the circle for the Majors pitching three innings allowing only one hit and one run.
In game two, Matthews drove McKinley home with an RBI single in the first inning and the Majors never looked back.
Amanda Berry came to the plate in the second inning with the bases loaded and promptly belted a grand slam home run over the left field fence for her first collegiate home run.
Millsaps added five in the third highlighted by a two-run home run from
Allison Tarbox as the Majors built a 10-0 lead through three innings.
Emily Spicer singled home McAllister in the fourth and Berry added her sixth RBI of the game being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as the Majors closed out the game 12-0.
Lindsay Drane started for Millsaps and got her first win of the season pitching two perfect innings with four strikeouts.
Matthews finished the day 6-for-7 with eight RBIs and added three runs scored as the team combined for 26 hits in the two games.
The Majors, now 7-7 on the year, will finish their grueling schedule of 12 games in eight days when they face conference foe Trinity University in a pair of doubleheaders in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday and Saturday.
