MOBILE, Ala. – The Millsaps College women’s tennis team picked up its first win of the 2010 spring season by defeating Piedmont College 5-0 on Saturday but fell to both Huntingdon College and the University of Mobile to close the weekend road trip with a 1-2 record.
In a match played to decision because of the threat of poor weather in the area, the Majors opened play with a 5-1 loss to the Lady Hawks from Huntingdon on Saturday morning.
The team of
Lauren Williams and
Stephanie Brown claimed the only point at the No. 1 doubles position rallying to win the match 9-7 after saving a match point earlier in the pro set.
Later on Saturday afternoon, Millsaps bounced back to record its first win of the season taking down the Lady Lions from Piedmont College 5-0.
With darkness closing in, the match was played to decision, but that did not affect the Majors as they swept through doubles for the early 3-0 advantage.
Allison Zakaras and
Lauren Williams convincingly won their singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively, to close out the match 5-0.
“The girls all stuck together and got it done today” head coach Jay Pacelli said. “The lineup was the healthiest it has been all season.”
Continuing to play quality tennis, the Majors were unable to come up with a repeat performance on Monday against the Lady Rams from the University of Mobile, falling 6-3.
The No. 2 doubles team of Zakaras and
Morgan Shell easily won 8-1 to give Millsaps one point heading into singles action.
Shell got another point for the Majors with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles while
Brelynn David won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot but it was not enough as Mobile won the other four singles spots for the 6-3 victory.
The Majors, now 1-10 on the season, will return to the court on March 26 when they host the University of Texas-Tyler, who is ranked No. 30 nationally.
