CLINTON - The Millsaps College men's and women's tennis team traveled to rival Mississippi College on Thursday for non-conference matches that the Choctaws won by scores of 7-2 and 9-0, respectively.
On the men's side, the Majors (2-6) gained one point in doubles when the team of
David Bastian and
Malte Schick won at the No. 2 position, 8-6.
Millsaps almost got a second point at doubles but the
Geoff Joseph/
Adam Tilly combination lost in a tiebreak, 9-8 (7-4).
The Choctaws claimed five of the six singles points winning in straight sets for all but one match where
Campbell Hughes took the match into the third set before falling.
Alex Cummings got the only point for the Majors in singles by winning 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot but it was not enough as MC claimed the victory, 7-2.
"The loss is disappointing as we gave up the momentum by dropping two tough doubles points" head coach Jay Pacelli said. "The team needs to rebound quickly for its next match."
The Millsaps women (0-8) continue to struggle with injuries that forced the team to forfeit four points --three singles and one doubles-- against the Lady Choctaws in a 9-0 loss.
"Injuries are part of the game and we understand that" Pacelli said.
The Majors quickly fell behind with two losses in doubles and MC closed the match when Andrea Boyles defeated
Morgan Shell at No. 1 singles for the match-clinching decision.
With the match already decided, the teams shortened the remaining single matches to eight-game pro sets.
Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, March 9 when they host cross-town rival Belhaven University beginning at 4 p.m.
