STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Fighting through poor weather and playing conditions, the Millsaps College men’s tennis team finished the 2010 SCAC Championships in eighth place out of nine teams led by Adam Haywood’s 26th place finish.
The field was forced to battle through difficult playing conditions as thunderstorms with heavy rain passed through the Atlanta area on Saturday forcing play to be postponed causing teams to finish both the second and third rounds on Sunday.
Haywood finished in a tie with Warren Taylor of Trinity University with a final score of 243 after shooting rounds of 85 and 80 to open the tournament before closing with a career-low round of 78 on Sunday.
Jerry Johnston opened with a team-low 81 in the first round but struggled while firing an 86 in round two.
Johnston rebounded in the final round by carding a 79 to finish with a three-day total of 246, which placed in a tie for 31st.
Gabe Aguilar continued to improve on the course over the weekend after an opening 91 by shooting an 87 in the second round and finishing with an 84 for a 262 total and a 39th place finish.
Close behind Aguilar was
Jake Sherrington, who took a different path by opening with his best round (87) before dropping back with rounds of 96-93 to finish in 40th place with a three-day total of 276.
Rounding out the Majors total was
James McAuley who fired rounds of 97-91-94 to finish with a 282 and a 42nd place finish.
As a team, Millsaps carded equal rounds of 344 for the first two days before closing the event with a 334 for a final score of 1022 to finish in eighth, 20 strokes ahead of ninth place Hendrix College.
Centre College narrowly defeated Southwestern University for the conference title as the teams tied but the Colonels claimed the tiebreaker, which came down to the score of the team's fifth golfer.
Centre’s Chris Morris won the tournament recording an overall score of 216 to be named the medalist while also earning SCAC Player-of-the-Year honors.
