MAJORS TROUNCE GRIFFINS

JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors had seven different goal scorers and got head coach John Hoeffler his first career win, an 18-5 victory over the Fontbonne Griffins in the Majors' home opener on Saturday.

The Majors made an early statement on Saturday, scoring early and often in the first quarter. The Majors out shot Fontbonne 12-2 in the first quarter en route to an eight goal onslaught. Hunter Stevison scored just 30 seconds into the game on a Ryan McKay feed. It would be the first of two first quarter goals for Stevison, who later scored on the man advantage. Minutes after Stevison's first goal, he set up Simon Sherman for his first goal. Jack Houtz got the first of his two at the nine minute mark as the Majors kept the pressure on the Griffins. Millsaps then erupted for five goals in the final four minutes of the first, including two just 19 seconds apart.

The Majors would make it 11-0 with three more goals in the second's first few minutes. Ryan McKay scored his second of the game off a Adam Shubert pass. It would be McKay's fourth point of what would be a 10-point day for the senior. Fontbonne would get their offense going on the man advantage, making use of two late Millsaps' penalties to score and make it an 11-3 game at the half.

The Griffin's would make it four unanswered goals after scoring 90 seconds into the second half. The Majors would respond in a big way in the third quarter, scoring five straight goals. McKay was the go-to man in the third, scoring three times and assisting on one more. Millsaps led 16-4 after three.

The fourth saw the Majors stretch the lead to 18-4 after goals by McKay and Sherman. A late Griffin goal rounded out the scoring.

Freshman Riley McLean got the win, and was terrific in net in his first collegiate game. McLean made 12 saves on 17 shots. The Majors out shot Fontbonne 35-17 on the evening and had a 50-33 groundball advantage.

Millsaps now sits at 1-1 on the young season and will travel to Texas and Louisiana for a pair of weekend road games starting next Friday. The Majors will meet up with the Pirates of Southwestern next Friday night for a 7pm faceoff.
