BSC RALLIES OVER MAJORS
JACKSON-The Millsaps Majors fell victim to a Birmingham Southern comeback on Saturday, falling 16-15 at Harper Davis Field in the season opener for both teams.
The Majors came out like gang busters on Saturday, scoring three times in the game's opening six minutes. Jamie Blair Page had two of her six goals during the run. After a BSC tally, the Majors would score just 20 seconds later and tack on three more in a six minute span to take a 7-1 lead. Midway through the first half, BSC went on a 5-2 goal run over a five minute span to cut the Millsaps' lead to 9-6. The teams would trade two goal runs in the final two minutes of the half and Millsaps led 11-8 after the opening 30 minutes.
The second half started much like the first. Page set up Kelsey Ingraham before adding another tally of her own, off a free position shot as the Majors lead grew to 13-8. The Panthers would charge back with four unanswered, led by Amanda Amerson and Madeline Golden who had two points each during the run. Whitney Smith had five goals on the afternoon, none bigger than her final one, which gave the Majors a 15-12 lead with 12 minutes left.
The Panthers would rally behind Golden and Amerson who each had two goals during another four goal surge. Amerson netted what would be the game winner with just over three minutes left with the man advantage. The Majors would get a man-up opportunity themselves minutes later, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Page and Smith led the offense with six and five goals each, respectfully. Madelyn Walker got the tough loss but made 15 saves against 31 shots. The two teams played nearly dead even, with BSC owning a slight 36-32 shot advantage and each team recorded 36 ground balls.
The Majors will have a quick turn around when they travel to Montgomery to take on the Huntingdon Hawks. Face-off is set for 2pm.
