MAJORS CHARGE PAST CHOCTAWS
CLINTON, MS- The Millsaps Majors women's tennis team started off the 2014 season in fine fashion with a five to three win over the Mississippi College Choctaws on Thursday.
For the second year in a row, Bianca Suarez clinched the victory for the Majors. Her win in her individual match gave the Majors the all important fifth point, and the win.
The Majors got off to a solid start, winning two of the three doubles' matches. Deena Li Kam Wa and Callie Creekmore took the first point of the match with an 8-1 win. Millsaps picked up a crucial second doubles' point with a 9-8 (5) victory by Laura Kebert and Lauren Pratt on court two in doubles. Kebert and Pratt clinched the point with a 7-5 win in the tiebreak. The Majors just barely missed out on a doubles sweep as Suarez and Anna Brahce fell 9-7 in a grueling match.
The Majors continued to rack up points as the match turned to the singles. Li Kam Wa and Creekmore wasted no time in getting the Majors one step closer to victory, each winning 6-0, 6-1. The Choctaws picked up wins on courts four and five to make it 4-3 in favor of the Majors. Those results set up Suarez to clinch the match.
Suarez won the first set 6-3, but found herself down 3-4 in the second set. The sophomore stormed back, winning the last three games of the second set to clinch it for the Majors 6-3, 6-4. After the result had been finalized, the teams agreed to stop the final match on court six with Kebert leading 3-2.
The Majors return home to the Coach Montgomery Courts this weekend for a pair of home matches. They will kick off the 2014 home season against Tougaloo on Saturday and LSU-Shreveport on Sunday.
