Demorest, GA – The Millsaps Mens' Lacrosse Team started the regular season in thrilling style with an intense, come from behind victory over Piedmont earlier today.
 
Majors senior captain Jack Houtz scored the game winner with 38 seconds left in the game to seal the win.  Millsaps trailed by as much as five goals before mounting the dramatic comeback, which saw the Majors score seven goals in the fourth quarter alone.  Today also sets a new milestone for Millsaps Men's Lacrosse.  With the win, the Majors have their first 1-0 start in the young program's history and first win over Piedmont.
 
"First time beating Piedmont and first 1-0 start in program history  - great win today for us," Head Men's Lacrosse Coach John Hoeffler said.  "We started sloppy in the first half, but played much better in the second to comeback and win."
 
Millsaps did lead early in the first quarter with a goal by Garrett Perez.  Piedmont, however, answered by scoring six unanswered goals to take a 6-1, second quarter lead.
 
The Majors would add two more goals in the first half via Alexander Cottone and Garrett Perez, but Piedmont scored twice to keep the contest a five-goal game.  After the half, the Majors made the proper adjustments to start the comeback rally.
 
A quick goal in the first three minutes of second half play got things started for the Majors, but Piedmont again added to their score two minutes later.  From there, the game turned into a back and forth contest where the Majors began to close the gap.
 
Jack Houtz, Simon Sherman and Sam Snyder all scored in the third quarter to make the contest a four-goal game with 15 minutes left.  In the final 15 minutes of play, the Majors pressed on a flurry of offensive attacks.
 
Houtz scored again to cut the Lion's lead to three goals.  Piedmont added another score, but the Majors answered with four unanswered goals by Parks Douglass, Simon Sherman, Sam Snyder and Jack Houtz. 
 
With the game tied 12-12 with just under five minutes to play, Piedmont retook the lead on a man-up goal.  The tenacious Majors, however, answered again.
 
Parks Douglass scored his second goal of the day on an equalizer with 2:56 left in the game.  From there, Riley McLean and the defense held strong to give the Majors one last offensive opportunity. 
 
With all eyes on the offense, team captain Jack Houtz drilled a game-winning shot with just 38 seconds left in the game.
 
On the ensuing series of plays, Brooks McCormick caused a final Piedmont turnover to give possession to Millsaps.  One final, successful clear attempt with 11 seconds left sealed the victory and 1-0 start for the Majors.
 
Jack Houtz led the Majors with four goals while Simon Sherman, Parks Douglass and Garrett Perez all scored two each.  Sherman also led the Majors with two assists while Houtz led in ground balls with 12.
 
"I'm proud with how the guys battled back today," Coach Hoeffler said.  "We have a lot of learning to do this week to get ready for a tough test against Hope on Saturday."
 
The Majors will look to continue the positive momentum from today's win with the Home Opener next weekend.  Opening faceoff against Hope from Harper Davis Field is set for next Saturday, Feb. 13th at noon.
