JACKSON, Miss. – Recently, it was announced that Sam Kohnke has been named to the Majors men's basketball coaching staff.

Kohnke was a member of the Millsaps men's basketball team the last two seasons after transferring from Loyola University in New Orleans. During his 2017-18 senior season, he was named the Majors' team captain and played in all 26 games, averaging 7.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest. He was also the recipient of the Archie Lamb award, which is awarded to the student-athlete who shows exemplary leadership ability

During his 2016-17 junior campaign, he averaged 11.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game en route to being All-SAA honorable mention and named to the All-SAA tournament team. He led the Majors in rebounds, assists and steals, grabbing team MVP honors. He finished the season second in the SAA in steals and eighth in assists.

He graduated in 2018 with a degree in philosophy and a minor in business administration. He was also a two-year member of the Millsaps Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Prior to transferring to Millsaps, Kohnke played one season at Loyola College where he played in 25 games for the Wolf Pack.

He's a 2012 graduate of the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans. He was a four-year letter winner and team captain in 2012. He was an all-state honorable mention, all-metro, three time all-district and a district MVP.

Kohnke spent the 2018 summer at Tulane University working under Green Wave head coach Mike Dunleavy. His primary role was assisting in practice and analyzing film.

Majors' men's basketball head coach Jimmy Smith said he's excited to have Kohnke join the staff because of his experience and his commitment to Millsaps.

"I am very excited to rejoin Sam with this team," Smith said. "Sam spent the summer working for Tulane men's basketball and gained a lot of meaningful experience. As a senior last year, Sam was an exceptional leader and always displayed a team first attitude. There is no doubt that Sam cares deeply about Millsaps, our basketball program, as well as the young men in the program. Sam has a very high basketball IQ and will be heavily involved in every aspect of our program. We are all excited to have him rejoin the group to help us complete the goals that we set forth at the beginning of last season."
