Athletic Director Ron Jurney Resigns

JACKSON — Millsaps College Athletic Director, Ron Jurney, has officially resigned his position to accept the Athletic Director/Head Football Coach position at Canton Academy in Canton, Miss. Jurney will remain at full capacity as athletic director through the end of the month.

Jurney has served as the Athletic Director at Millsaps College for 13 years. During his tenure as athletic director, the College has made improvements to athletic facilities in excess of 17 million dollars – most of these enhancements were made possible from fundraising efforts.

Jurney spoke very highly of his experience at Millsaps: “Millsaps is so fortunate to have the support of many great alums and I will certainly miss them.” He then added, “I will miss Millsaps so much. It was truly a pleasure to work with such a great coaching staff and student athletes who were committed to excellence both academically and athletically.”

The Millsaps Athletic Department thrived under the direction of Ron Jurney. During his 13 years at the College, Millsaps captured 15 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles (9 outright, 6 divisional) and received a record 10 NCAA tournament bids. Jurney also served as Head Football Coach for the Majors from 1996-1999. In his first year as head coach, Jurney went 8-2 and captured the SCAC title.

Also during Jurney's term, Millsaps has been awarded the David M. Halbrook Award 11 times. The Halbrook award is given to the college or university in Mississippi with the highest student-athlete graduation rate.

On his new job title, Jurney said, “I am most excited about the opportunity to get back on the football field once again. Canton Academy is a quality school with strong leadership and I look forward to being a part of the exciting things that are happening there.”
