Wetzel Named to All-American Team

JACKSON – Millsaps senior outfielder Garner Wetzel was selected as a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division III All-American Team. Wetzel finished the year with a .400 batting average 14 homeruns and 91 RBI.

This announcement is the latest in a long list of accomplishments for Wetzel in the 2006 season. For the second year in a row Wetzel was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Wetzel was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team as well as the NCAA Central Regional All-Tournament Team. During his offensive explosion this season Wetzel recorded 91 RBI – tops in the nation as well as a new single season SCAC record.

Third basemen Hunter Abrams and right handed pitcher John Fox were selected to South Region ABCA All-America Second Team. Abrams, a sophomore from Columbus, Miss., batted .413 for the Majors this season with 85 hits and 53 RBI. Abrams only struck out five times on the season. Fox, a fifth-year senior from Dallas, Tex., put up a 9-0 record in 2006 with a 3.83 ERA. Fox also had 81 strikeouts on the season.

Additionally, shortstop Justin Carter and right handed pitcher Todd Kindler were named to the South Region ABCA All-America Third Team. Carter, a junior from Columbus, Miss., batted .358 for the season with 52 RBI. Kindler, a senior from DeRidder, La., was 10-3 this season with a 3.52 ERA.

The final ABCA poll of 2006, released after the conclusion of the Division III College World Series, has the Majors ranked thirteenth in the country. The Majors bowed out of the NCAA Central Regional tournament in the championship round with back-to-back losses to Aurora.
