SEWANEE, Ga. -- For the third consecutive year and the most by any other program in the SCAC (nine), Hunter Owen of Millsaps College was named the league's 2007 Offensive Player-of-the-Year in exclusive voting by the conference's head coaches.
A junior outfielder from Jackson, Owen hit .404 this season (sixth, SCAC) in 161 plate appearances and carried a league-best .776 slugging percentage.
He led the SCAC in doubles (23), home runs (11), RBIs (70) and total bases (125) and finished in the Top 6 in the league in on-base percentage (.520, third), runs scored (57, fifth), hits (65, sixth), walks (31, T-fourth) and stolen bases (21, second).
His 70 RBIs currently lead the nation and his 23 doubles set a new single-season Millsaps record. At the 2007 Baseball Championships, Owen hit .571 (8-for-14) with a tournament-best four doubles and eight runs driven in as the Majors made it to the SCAC finals before losing to Austin College.
Joining Owen on the 2007 All-SCAC First Team were seniors Nick Crawford, Justin Carter, Jason Hadley and Brent Buffa along with junior Hunter Abrams and sophomore Russ Boyd. Seniors John Pacillo and Luke Morrow and juniors Derrik Boland and Brandon Ingram received Honorable Mention recognition.
