Salmon, Williams Tabbed SCAC Player/Pitcher of the Week

SEWANEE, Ga. – After sweeping the inaugural Wilson/DeMarini Classic at home the previous weekend, senior first baseman Quinn Salmon and freshman Aaron Williams swept the SCAC weekly baseball awards, with Salmon being named Player of the Week and Williams being tabbed the Co-Pitcher of the Week.

After backing up Luke Morrow at first base the previous three seasons and getting his first chance as a regular starter for the Majors in 2008, Salmon had a breakout weekend, going a combined 7-for-10 at the plate with 12 RBIs, eight runs scored, three HRs (grand slam) and two doubles.

Salmon picked up his first career home run on Friday in an 18-9 win over LaGrange in odd fashion, chugging around the bases after the ball stayed in the park to record the rare inside-the-park home run. An inning later, he added to a monster day with a grand slam over the left centerfield wall, followed by a pair of RBI-singles to finish the day 4-for-5 from the plate with a total of nine RBIs.

In his first career collegiate start on Sunday, Williams helped the Majors to an 8-2 victory over the SCAC preseason favorite Rhodes College to complete a 3-0 weekend.

In 5.0 innings of work on the mound, Williams tossed a 1-hitter, while scattering six strikeouts against just two walks. He struck out five of the first eight batters he faced.

The Majors will wrap up a four-game homestand to start the year tonight, hosting cross-town rival MS College in the opening game of the Cowboy Maloney Trophy Series. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. and can be heard live on www.espnradio1240.com and on 1240 AM in the Jackson area.
