Majors Lose a Pair of Coaches from Football Staff

JACKSON -- Millsaps College head football coach Mike DuBose announced today the resignation of wide receivers coach David Johnson and defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson, who will both assume new posts with different schools immediately.

"Both coaches have played integral parts for this program the last four years," DuBose said.  "They have tremendous futures ahead of them."

Both Johnson and Woodson have been with the Majors' coaching staff for the previous four seasons, three alongside DuBose (2006-08) and one with former head coach David Saunders (2005).

Since their arrival in 2005, the duo have played crucial roles in the success of the football program in their respective positions, with both the wide receiver corps and defensive secondary ranking among the Top 30 in all of Division III the past few seasons.

Johnson will replace Wayne Cordova as the head football coach at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, assuming his first head coaching job starting March 1. The Louisiana native spent one season with the Purple Knights in 2005 as the passing coordinator before being forced out by Hurricane Katrina.

Having to commute back-and-forth from New Orleans the past three seasons where his wife, Akeia, and youngest son, Karaaz, live, Johnson will unquestionably enjoy being back with his family.

“I had an unbelievable experience working for coach DuBose at Millsaps,” Johnson said. “It's a great institution with great people and was definitely a blessing in disguise. There's no doubt that I wouldn't be in the position I am now without my experience with the Majors.”

During his four-year stint with Millsaps, Johnson guided one of the deepest receiving corps in the country, beginning with All-American Chris Jackson in 2006 and followed by a collection of talented receivers in Eric McCarty, Raymece Savage, Donnie Epps, Louis Conley and Michael Galatas the past two seasons. In all, Johnson coached 16 All-SCAC selections during his tenure, including four First Team selections, and helped McCarty become just the fourth Major in school history to eclipse 2,000 yards receiving.

Woodson will join head coach Jay Mills at Division I Charleston Southern University in Charleston, S.C., where he will assume the same position as defensive backs coach.  The Bucs open the 2009 season on Sept. 5 against the reigning national champion Florida Gators.

Last season, three of Woodson's four defensive backs earned First Team All-SCAC honors as the defense led the League in passes defended with 75. In his second season with the Majors in 2006, Millsaps picked off 18 passes and broke up 59 more for a total of 77 passes defended – an improvement of 41 passes defended a year prior and the highest total in school history.

In 2007, the Majors' defense ranked second in the country in pass efficiency defense (81.6 ypg), fifth in scoring defense (11.9 ppg) and eighth in turnovers gained (36). In 20 games over the course of the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Millsaps also had 38 interceptions, including 10 returned for touchdowns.

Since 2005, Woodson helped a total of nine players gain All-Conference recognition. In addition to league honors, Woodson also helped coach Marcus Harris, who was named to Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-American Team as an Honorable Mention and was thrice named to D3football.com's National Team of the Week in 2006, while Ray Kline was tabbed D3football.com All-South Region Second Team in 2007.

Millsaps will open the 2009 season on Sept. 5 at Mississippi College.
