JACKSON -- Millsaps head football coach Mike DuBose announced today the addition of wide receivers coach Adam Nelson and defensive backs coach Bobby Willcox who will fill the vacant positions left early this month.
A native of Westwego, La., Nelson will succeed his hometown friend, David Johnson, for the upcoming season at the wide receivers slot after Johnson left to take a head coaching position at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans.
Nelson is coming off his first collegiate coaching stint at his alma mater, Southern University, where he coached tight ends for the 2008 season. Prior to SU, Nelson grabbed his first coaching job in 2005 at Capitol HS in Baton Rouge where he coached for one season, followed by a pair of seasons at Desire Street Academy from 2006-07.
As a player, Nelson spent three, successful seasons with the Jaguars' football team from 2000-03 as a wide receiver/tight end and was a part of the 2003 SU National Champion HBCU team. He went on to attend training camp with the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers before going into coaching.
Nelson received his bachelor's in therapeutic recreation in 2003 and is currently pursuing a master's degree.
Nelson has aspirations of becoming an offensive coordinator and head coach in the future. He is the son of Lillian and Luther Nelson and has two sisters, Ashley and April.
Willcox enters his first season with the defensive secondary and first with the Majors in 2009 after spending the last four seasons at New Mexico State University.
While at New Mexico State, Willcox spent one season as video coordinator in 2005, one season as a graduate assistant with the defensive secondary in 2006, one season with the inside linebackers in 2007 and most recently as the tight ends coach in 2008.
In 2007, Willcox guided Aggies linebacker Dante Floyd to all-Western Athletic Conference second team honors, as he led the team in tackles with 124. Overall, Willcox's inside linebackers tallied 266 tackles.
With the secondary in 2006, Courtney Bryan ranked fifth in the nation in passes defended, while as a group the team grabbed 11 interceptions, 31 pass breakups and had three of the Aggies' top-5 leading tacklers.
Before coming to New Mexico State, Willcox played football at Western New Mexico University from 2002-04 as a wide receiver, leading the team with 39 catches for 671 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman. He later got his degree from New Mexico State in 2006.
Willcox is married to the former Lisa Sevieri, also a graduate of New Mexico State University, as the two celebrated their first child, Kadence in September. He also has an older brother, Todd and younger sister, Kami who both graduated from NMSU.
The Majors opened spring camp on March 25 and will go until April 18.
