ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior pitcher \#Tait Hendrix\# and sophomore infielder \#Will Hawkins\# of Millsaps College have been named to the 2009
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Team as voted upon by more than 2,300 members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Since 1952, the CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams recognize student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. The All-District Teams originated in 2002.
Hendrix was tabbed a First Team selection, becoming the third Major in three years and third all-time. The senior lefthander joins John Pacillo (2007) and Hunter Abrams (2008) as first teamers, boasting a 3.75 GPA in business while going 6-1 on the mound with a 4.45 ERA and a save.
Hawkins earned Second Team honors with a 3.36 GPA in geology. The sophomore from Nettleton, Miss., is having a breakout season, hitting a team-best .427 with 16 doubles, 11 home runs, 54 RBIs, 123 total bases and a .750 slugging percentage.
The Academic All-District VI team is comprised of student-athletes from schools in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. As a first team selection, Hendrix will be placed on the ballot for Academic All-America honors which will be announced on
Tuesday, May 26.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable). In baseball and softball, pitchers must have at least 10.0 innings pitched.
Also, no student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
