Five New Faces Added to Millsaps Football Staff

JACKSON – Millsaps College head football coach Aaron Pelch announced today the addition of five new assistant coaches that will join him in rounding-out the eight-man football staff for the 2010 season.

Rich Scangarello will take the reins as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Majors after spending last season with the NFL's Oakland Raiders as the assistant quarterbacks coach.

Scangarello spent the previous four seasons at UC Davis as an offensive assistant before taking over as the co-offensive coordinator in 2008.

Accepting the job as defensive coordinator will be Trey Haverty, who spent the last three seasons with TCU as a graduate assistant on the top ranked total defense in Division I in 2008 and 2009.

Haverty spent a year at Cisco Junior College as wide receivers coach in 2006 before joining TCU where he worked primarily with the defensive backs.

A standout wide receiver at Texas Tech, Haverty earned SportsIllustrated.com Second-Team All-America honors and third team honors by the Associated Press in 2004 when he led the Big 12 Conference in receptions (77) and finished second in receiving yards (1,019).

Taking over as offensive line coach is Kyle Skierski, who was the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator at Santa Margarita Catholic High School a year ago.

A 2005 All-Great West Honorable Mention and 2006 All-Great West Second Team selection at left guard while attending UC Davis, Skierski played professional football in Vienna, Austria in 2007 and spent 2008 with the La Courneuve Flash, where he was named the Offensive MVP on his team that won the French National Championship.

Jeff Johnson joins the staff as the running backs and tight ends coach for the Majors marking his return to the collegiate level after coaching high school football and working in the private sector for a number of years.

A defensive back at Miami (Ohio) University, Johnson worked three seasons as a graduate assistant with the University of Memphis while obtaining his Master's Degree in Health and Sport Science.

Casey Younger, a 2008 graduate of Millsaps College and defensive tackle for the Majors, returns to his alma mater as the defensive line coach.

Younger, an ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, earned D3football.com All-American Honorable Mention and D3football.com All-South Region First Team as a senior for the Majors and was selected as the SCAC's Defensive Player-of-the-Year.

Returning to the staff is Ronnie Wheat, who will take over as linebackers coach and become the recruiting coordinator for the Majors after spending last season as coach of the outside linebackers.

Wheat was a three-year starting linebacker while at Millsaps where he was a two-time All-SCAC selection before graduating in the spring of 2008.

Ben Cain, a 2009 graduate of Millsaps, returns to the staff as the special teams coordinator after spending last season as a coaching intern working primarily with the offense.

The Majors opened spring practice March 22 and will continue until April 16.
