JACKSON – Tickets for the 13th Backyard
Brawl between the Millsaps Majors and Mississippi College Choctaws
are on sale as the two teams prepare to meet on Thursday, August 30
at Harper David Field at 7 p.m. This marks the 41st game between
the Majors and Choctaws and 13th meeting since the rivalry was
reestablished in 2000 after a 41-year hiatus.
Tickets can be purchased online at
www.millsaps.edu/backyardbrawl.
Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. The matchup
features one of the premier rivalries in Division III, as the two
schools are only 10 miles apart.
Mississippi College has prevailed in the last three contests,
but has won by a combined total of 13 points, while two of the last
three games have gone into overtime.
The Choctaws narrowly escaped Millsaps last season in a wild,
rain-soaked contest. They survived 33-27 in overtime at
Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton. Millsaps quarterback
Garrett Pinciotti threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, while
linebacker Jeb White led the way defensively with 10 tackles.
Head Coach Aaron Pelch is coming off a 4-6 record in his
second season as the Majors make the move into the newly formed
Southern Athletic Association. His first season ended with Millsaps
earning its first record below .500 since 2005. Hopes are high for
the 2012 campaign as they return 16 starters from a season ago
including First Team All-SCAC selections Jeb White, Joiner Stewart,
and Nathan Quick, Second Team All-SCAC selection Stephen Gates, and
All-SCAC Honorable Mentions Greg Blasiar, Jonathan Moore, Kyle
Skene, and Alex Stewart. They also welcome back the SCAC Newcomer
of the Year from a season ago, Jeff Milner.
The Majors' last win over the Choctaws came in 2008, with a
42-6 rout on their way to the second undefeated season in the
program's history.
After defeating Millsaps in 2011, the Choctaws finished with a
disappointing 3-7 record that included going 0-5 on the road. The
Choctaws lost many seniors from a season ago, but are bringing back
great talent including All-ASC Honorable Mention wide receiver
DeMarrion Buford Hughes and placekicker Chris Campbell.
Mississippi College leads the All-Time Series 31-13-6, but
since the Backyard Brawl was implemented in 2000, the Choctaws hold
a narrow 7-4 advantage over Millsaps.
Also happening in the rivalry will be the second part of
production for The Grudge Match, a film being made about
the Millsaps-Mississippi College rivalry. Last season, the
production crew filmed the lead up to the game in Clinton; shooting
for the movie will continue prior to and during this season's
contest.
