JACKSON-Fresh off an appearance in the SAA semi-finals, the Millsaps Majors men's basketball team was honored on Monday, placing three starters on the honorable metion team.
Senior Nick Cortese and juniors Tully Gilligan and Murray Kastner got the nod from the Southern Athletic Association coaches.
Cortese was the Majors leading scorer on the year, averaging a shade under 12 points at 11.7 per game. Cortese also averaged three rebounds and three assists per game. The senior hit a step back buzzer-beating three to top Sewanee on a play that was featured on D3hoops.com. Additionally, Cortese was Millsaps' nominee for the All-State Good Works Award.
Gilligan was a jack-of-all-trades this year for the Majors,seeing time at point guard, forward and a hybrid point-forward for the Majors. Gilligan thrived in both roles, averaging eight points six rebounds and four assists per game. He knocked on the door several times of a triple-double. Gilligan showed off his arm when he heaved an 85-foot pass to Ryan Berger to set-up the game-winning shot against Berry.
Kastner settled into the team's point guard role and was the resident sharp-shooter for the Majors this season. Kastner finished fourth in the SAA in three-point shooting at 43 percent on the season. On the year, Kastner averaged a shade under 10 points per game at 9.7 including a season high 21 against Hendrix.
