ATLANTA, GA- Senior Keith Shumaker was named the Southern Athletic Association Player of the Year for the second time, headlining seven Majors named All-SAA.
Shumaker also won the award during his sophomore season. The Brandon, Mississippi native led the conference in runs scored (48) and walks (23). He was second in the SAA with 62 hits and hit an impressive .417 while slugging at a .598 clip. The right-hander also excelled on the mound, going 8-1 with a 2.31 ERA during the regular season. Shumaker also set Millsaps history this season, his 62 hits have given him 254 for his career, a new school record.
Joining Shumaker on the first team are outfielders Isaac Glenn and William Chenoweth. Glenn has had a phenomenal offensive season. Glenn led the SAA in hits (66), average (.446), on-base percentage (.526) and slugging (.649). The junior was second in the SAA with 44 runs batted in and third in doubles (16).
Chenoweth thrived as both a right fielder and as a reliever. The senior was first in the SAA in doubles (20) and top-five in: home runs, triples, runs scored, runs batted in, slugging percentage and games saved. His five home runs led the team as did his four triples and 12 stolen bases.
Annon Etheridge, Andy Page and Smokey Ethridge were named to the second team and Lee Ogletree an honorable mention. Etheridge had a splendid senior season, hitting .384 during the regular season. He finished in the top-10 in conference in average, on-base percentage, hits and runs scored.
Andy Page was a spark for the Majors at the top and bottom of the lineup. The freshman has hit .345 and tied for the team lead with 12 steals.
Ethridge served as the Majors' ace this season, throwing game one in every conference series. The senior finished third in the SAA in strikeouts and has posted a sterling 2.35 earned run average. He bested SAA Pitcher of the Year Blake Stevens in a 2-0 shutout earlier this season. Ethridge threw a complete-game two-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
Ogletree provided power in his first year as a Major. The sophomore slugged three home runs and drove in 36 runs. He also hit 12 doubles and made an impact in the running game, throwing out nearly 20 percent of would-be base stealers.
