JACKSON, Miss. (Mar. 8, 2017) – Oglethorpe University scored the first four goals of the game and never trailed as the Stormy Petrels took a 21-8 win over Millsaps College in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) women's lacrosse game at Harper Davis Field. Senior
Cherilyn Cabanero (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior
Alyssa Smith (Isle of Palms, S.C.) each scored four goals for the Majors.
Oglethorpe (4-3, 1-1 SAA) saw Juliana Altman score twice in the first three minutes, starting the Stormy Petrels on an opening four-goal spurt. Millsaps (0-6, 0-3 SAA) responded three and a half minutes later when Smith scored off a pass from junior
Katelyn Ferrell (Jackson, Miss.) to make it a three-goal game. The teams then traded goals over the next couple of minutes, with Cabanero's second score of the contest pulling the Majors back within three at 6-3.
A penalty gave Oglethorpe a man-up opportunity and the Petrels cashed in on a goal from Madison Goss. That started a streak of three straight scores for Oglethorpe, which went on to outscore Millsaps 6-2 the rest of the half to take a 12-5 advantage at the break.
Smith got the draw control to start the second half and raced downfield, scoring her third goal of the game to pull Millsaps back to 12-6. Oglethorpe responded with three straight goals, however, taking a 16-6 lead on a tally from Samantha Chap on a free position attempt. The Majors could not come up with a run of their own to answer, and the Petrels went on to take the victory.
Senior
Bria Johnson (Baton Rouge, La.) picked up an assist for Millsaps to three ground balls and four draw controls. Freshman
Alicia Price (Meridian, Miss.) made 19 saves in goal and shared the team lead with Cabanero with four ground balls. Altman led Oglethorpe with six goals.
Millsaps will play again at home in its next contest. The Majors will host Huntingdon College on Sunday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Harper Davis Field.
