CLINTON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's cross country programs got off to a strong start at the Mississippi 5K Opener on Friday. The women's program finished sixth as a team and totaled five in the top 50 on the rain-soaked Choctaw Trails. Teams from across NCAA Division I, II and III as well as NAIA competed.
Seniors Sarah Strickland (25th, 21:23.7) and Fran Edwards (29th, 21:43.0) entered the top 30 of 89 finishers.
Freshman Claudia Dempsey had a strong showing her collegiate debut, claiming 41st with a time of 23 minutes, 2.4 seconds. Seniors Tyler Hamby (43rd, 23:31.0) and MacKenzie Farris (50th, 24:22.4) completed the Major scoring.
Fellow classmates Abby Henry (59th, 25:45.6) and Caroline Eschete (88th, 33:22.4) also competed for the Majors.
On the men's side, freshman Phillip Antis impressed in his collegiate debut, claiming 73rd place with a time of 18:41.6. Seniors Patch Heard (85th, 19:51.7) and Matthew Moore (102nd, 21:59.5) as well as freshman Aidan Brice (112th, 23:07.5) represented Millsaps as well.
The Majors next compete at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis on Saturday, Sept. 21.
