Roger Bynum

Roger Bynum began coaching at Millsaps in 2009 as the throws coach.

During his tenure at Millsaps, Bynum has coached athletes to 29 All-Conference finishes, including 8 conference champions. Kasey Laird was the conference champion in discus in 2011, 2012, 2013 and shot put in 2013. Jenna Johnson was conference champion in discus in 2015. Asael Hernandez was the discus champion in 2018. Also, Payton Passantino won the javelin title in 2017 and 2018. Payton Passantino also qualified for the NCAA Div 3 National Championships in 2018 where she finished 20th in the nation.

A list of All-Conferences finishers includes Kasey Laird (’11,’12,‘13), Alexis Guice (’12,’13,‘14), Sara Navarro (’12), Jenna Johnson (’14,‘15)  Randy Thackrey (‘13), Jerry Hamer (’13), Maurice Reese(’14), Clayton Killebrew (’14,’15), Payton Passantino (’17,’18), Asael Hernandez (’17,’18), and Michael Tadda (’18).  

Alexis Guice is the only Millsaps female thrower to score points in all 4 throwing events at the conference meet accomplishing it twice, in 2012 and 2014. She finished her 4 years as the all-time leader in conference points for Millsaps with a total of 70 points. Randy Thackrey is the only Millsaps male thrower to accomplish the feat. He did it in 2013.

Before Millsaps, Bynum served as a volunteer throws coach for Pearl High School and St. Andrews High School. He also was the founder and coach of the Pearl River Track Club, an AAU youth track club, from 2005-2012.

Bynum competed for Mississippi College, a Div 2 college in Clinton, Ms from 1987-1990 where he was a NCAA Div 2 All-American in discus in 1988. He still currently holds the MAIS high school state 1A discus record in the state of Mississippi.

He is married to Patricia Bynum. They have 4 children Justin, Erica, Dillon, and Kyle. They also have one granddaughter, Elizabeth.
