Gentry Johnson was named Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Millsaps College in August 2023.
Since taking over the program, Johnson has led the Majors to marked improvement and competitive growth. During his third campaign in 2025, Millsaps scored 33 goals — the program’s most in a single season since 2016. In his second season, the Majors recorded their highest win total since 2019, while conceding the fewest goals since 2017 and scoring the most goals since 2019.
In addition to his collegiate role, Johnson has continued to achieve success at the youth level as Director of Player Development for Rankin Soccer Club. In 2025, he led both the U16 and U19 girls to ECNL-RL Central Regional Championships.
In recognition of his success at the youth level, Johnson was named the 2023 Mississippi Soccer Association Female Competitive Coach of the Year and the 2022 Mississippi Soccer Association Male Competitive Coach of the Year. His teams have also achieved success on the regional and national stages, with the 2009 girls earning USYS National Finalist honors in 2023 and the 2007 girls earning USYS Regional Finalist honors.
Prior to joining Millsaps, Johnson served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Holmes Community College from 2021 to 2023. During his time with the program, the Holmes women captured back-to-back MACCC Tournament Championships and advanced to the NJCAA Division II National Final.
Johnson also gained experience at the semi-professional level, serving as head coach of the U23 Mississippi Blues SC in 2021 and as an assistant coach with Gaffa FC in 2020, both members of the Gulf Coast Premier League.
Johnson has served as Director of Player Development for Rankin Soccer Club since 2018, overseeing the development of players and teams competing at the state, regional, and national levels.
Before moving to Mississippi, Johnson spent seven years with the Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Football Club from 2011 to 2018. A Wilmington, North Carolina native, Johnson began his coaching career with the club, one of North Carolina’s premier ECNL programs, developing players at the elite youth level.
As a student-athlete, Johnson played collegiately at Francis Marion University and Cape Fear Community College, where he served as team captain, before completing his playing career at Greensboro College.
Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Johnson lives with his wife, Rylee Braden, and their son, Jack Johnson.
