TUNICA,- The Millsaps Majors Women's Golf Teams were back in action on Sunday and Monday to compete in the final match for the fall season at the Rhodes Collegiate Classic.
During Round 1 of the tournament, freshman Lauren Durbin led the Millsaps team in fifth place shooting 85 for the day. Sophomore Lauren Barattini finished in 11th for the day shooting a 91.
"Barattini posted her best score on Cottonwoods for her career, and it was in the toughest conditions she has ever played the course in," reports Coach Brescher. "Last year she played two events here and todays score is a sign of how much she has improved in a short time period. Im very proud of her and the progress she is making."
Freshman Whitney Smith was the next Major on the scorecard in 18th place with a score of 103. Following close was freshman Emma Lee MIkhalek in 20th place shooting a 109. Freshman Ashley Cabeceiras was next with a score of 121 in 21st place.
Millsaps got some better weather on Day Two and it showed with some better scores.
"The weather was the best I have ever seen today,"comments Coach Brescher. Usually, wind is always a factor in Tunica, MS, but there was no wind today, which made a direct reflection on how much our scoring improved."
Durbin dropped eight strokes from round one with a score of 77 for the day giving her a total 162 for the tournament placing her in second overall. Barratini also improved on her second day dropping six strokes giving her a score of 85, with an overall score of 176 placing her in 12th.
Smith completed with a score of 97 during round 2, dropping six strokes from round one, she come in 17th overall. Mikhalek had an impressive second day dropping nine strokes with a score of 100, placing her in 19th overall. Cabeceiras had the best imprvoment of the weekend with 13 strokes, she placed 20th for the weekend.
"As a team, we set three new personal and team records with our play for the second round," exclaims Coach Brescher. "Whitney posted her career best with a 97, Barattini posted a career best for eighteen holes with 85 and for thirty six holes with 176, and we broke our best team score by eighteen shots by posting a 359. Today's team performance is just a testament to how much our girls team has improved in such a short time period."
The Majors conclude their fall season and will be back in action in the Spring of 2013.
"I am very proud of the progress our girls are making and we hope to continue that progress as we pick back up in the spring time," concludes Coach Brescher.
