PIEDMONT, Ga. - The Millsaps Majors Women's Golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday at the Piedmont Fall Invitational.
The Majors saw a great improvement on Day Two as four of the five Majors dropped their scores significantly as Millsaps finished 10th in the tournament. It is the first time Millsaps has placed as a team in over five years.
"We are very pleased with the improvements our girls made for the second round," said Head Coach Eddie Brescher. "When we arrived for our practice round, we showed some nerves and struggled a little, but our girls kept working hard and it showed in our scoring improvement for the second round."
After breaking the school record for lowest round by a freshman with a 79, freshman
Lauren Durbin dropped slightly on Tuesday, shooting an 86 while finishing 17th individually.
Freshmen
Lauren Barattini finished up the last day of the tournament, shooting a 90, dropping 18 strokes from the day before, which put her in the 44th place. Freshman
Emma Lee Mikhalek placed 54th by shooting a 117, dropping six strokes from the previous day.
Rounding out the Majors was freshman
Whitney Smith, who finished shooting a 117 which also dropped her stroke count by 10 while finishing 57th. Freshman
Ashley Cabeceiras finished up the tournament shooting a 124, dropping 10 strokes and finishing 58th.
"Our team accomplished a lot this week," added Brescher. "We posted our first team score in a few years, had
Lauren Durbin break a school record for lowest round, all of our girls now have college golf experience (which will help them for future events), and we improved our team scoring average on the second round."
The Majors will be back in action in two weeks as they will compete in the Berry College Women's Chick-fil-A Classic in Rome, Ga. on Sept. 25th.
"The ladies have two weeks off until our next event," Brescher explained. "I have seen some areas where we can improve immediately and we will focus on these with each player individually in preparation for out next event at Berry."
