Box Score Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Men's Basketball Team earned their first victory of the season with a 72-64 win over Belhaven earlier tonight.
Tonight's contest renewed the basketball Riverside Rumble for both teams as the Majors earned their first victory against Belhaven in over a decade. Millsaps outscored Belhaven 28-26 for points in the paint while shooting 42 percent from the field by going 24-56. After leading 32-30 at half, the Majors outscored the Blazers 40-32 in the second half to earn their first win of the season.
Leading 67-58 with 1:26 left in the game, the Blazers scored on a David Simpson jumper to make the contest a two-possession game. The Majors answered with a fastbreak layup from
Myles Moore (
Quinn Atkinson on the assist). From there, the Majors made their remaining free throws from
Blake Jones and
Alex Gerchow to seal the victory.
Both teams equaled in second chance points with 11 while the Blazers led in points off turnovers (15-12) and points from the bench (38-22). Millsaps, however, led the game in free throw percentage by making 22-32 while the Blazers went 8-24.
Alex Gerchow had a season high in point totals with 15, which led the Majors for the contest.
Quinn Atkinson also totaled 13 points while
Myles Moore and
Jacob Spence totaled 10 points each.
Myles Moore also stated three of the five total team steals for the Majors.
Alex Gerchow and
Joshua McSwain also led the Majors in rebounds with nine each.
The Majors win against local rival Belhaven is the first of the year, as they will look to use the positive momentum heading into a road game next week. The Majors, now 1-4 on the year, will face Covenant after Thanksgiving break.
