Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Ticket Punched: Majors Headed to NCAA Tournament with Conference Championship

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps men's soccer team earned their first NCAA Tournament bid in school history by defeating Sewanee earlier today in the SAA Tournament Championship.

Today's 2-1 victory solidified the finest season in Millsaps soccer history.  Not only are the Majors headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time, but this season also marked the highest win total with 14 – and that could still increase.  The NCAA Tournament is the next opportunity on the horizon for Millsaps, but for now they'll enjoy the thrill of being conference tournament champions.

"Extremely proud of our guys and most importantly extremely happy for the efforts they put forth over the past three years in establishing the identity of Millsaps soccer," Head Soccer Coach Steve Voltz said.  "Now a new chapter is going to be written on Millsaps soccer, especially with never being to the NCAA Tournament before."

Regardless of whatever may be said, written or spoken about this championship team, one name will continually stand out – Nico Roth.  Roth scored twice in today's contest to give the Majors the victory.  Roth continued his solid offensive play, which leads the conference in nearly every statistical offensive category.

Roth's goals in the 15th and 75th minute were enough to give the Majors the win, but it did not occur without a late and intense comeback effort from Sewanee.  Kyle Johnston, who stands at six foot five, headed in a corner kick in the 81st minute to cut the Millsaps lead in half.

"Sewanee was more than a worthy opponent, we needed every bit of effort to win today," Coach Voltz said.

The late Sewanee goal was the first goal Johnathan Huebbe allowed for the entire tournament.  Huebbe, who was named to the All-Tournament team, made several spectacular saves that kept the Majors ahead.

"I thought Johnathan played his best game of the year," Coach Voltz said.  "He made a couple of tremendous saves that helped us win."

The euphoria and celebration that occurred on the field after the final whistle of today's game represented a great moment of accomplishment, especially for the graduating seniors of 2015.  Charlie Edwards, Daniel Staursky, Tyler Cook, Nico Roth, Conor Hagan, Lukas Elmhammar, and Ryan Skelly all gain the opportunity to continue their careers a little longer.

The Majors broke the record for win totals again, but astoundingly enough did so in fewer games.  The 14 wins on the season give the Majors a great deal of momentum and confidence heading into NCAA Tournament play.

"Extremely happy for the guys to have an opportunity to go to the national tournament," Coach Voltz said.  "We're going to relish it, but certainly not take it for granted either."

NCAA Tournament announcements and scheduling will be made tomorrow at 12:30 pm CST.  The Majors will be announced tomorrow for the first time ever as they will find out where the story continues on this remarkable season.
