Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Women's Basketball Team earned their third win in conference play with a 56-36 victory over Sewanee.
Tonight's convincing win improves the Majors to 3-2 in conference play while the Tigers fall to 2-3 (10-6 overall). After a low scoring first half where Millsaps led 20-19, the Majors regrouped in the second half by shooting 52% from the field. With the proper halftime adjustments and excellent shooting performance in the final 20 minutes of play, the Majors pulled away to earn their ninth win of the season.
The Majors certainly gained an added boost with effective shooting in the second half, but their defensive effort also created problems for the Tigers. Millsaps held Sewanee to just six points in the third period, which allowed the Majors to expand their lead on a 26-6 second half run. Leading 46-25 midway through the fourth quarter, Millsaps never looked back to improve over .500 in conference play.
Freshmen
Braxton Thomas led the Majors in scoring with 13 points while senior
Miah Brooks earned another double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Junior
Kim Klunk also totaled 12 points on the night with two assists.
Brooks and Klunk's excellent play underneath the basket helped the Majors outscore the Tigers for points in the paint by a staggering 34-12. Millsaps also led in bench points (25-14), points off turnovers (14-11) and second chance points (17-6). In overall shooting totals, Millsaps finished 21-53 (39.6%) from the field and 2-11 (18.2%) on three pointers while the Tigers went 12-50 (24%) from the field and 5-28 (17%) on three pointers.
The win improves Millsaps to 9-7 on the year as they host another conference game this weekend.
Next up for the Majors is a matchup against Centre this Sunday, Jan. 24th. Tip off from the Hangar Dome against the Colonels is set for noon.
