Box Score Birmingham, AL - The Millsaps Men's Basketball Team fell in to Birmingham Southern in overtime earlier today by a score of 81-78.
Today's contest continues a six-game road trip for the Majors as they opened SAA play in Birmingham against the Panthers. Majors sophomore guard
Quinn Atkinson finished the game with a season high 28 points including an assist and a steal. Atkinson's excellent play helped send the game into overtime after drilling three free throws with two seconds left in regulation to tie the game 69-69. Birmingham Southern, however, outscored the Majors 12-9 in the extra five minutes to seal their fifth win of the season.
Today's win improves the Panthers to 5-6 (1-0) on the season while the Majors fall to 1-10 (0-1). Millsaps held an early 40-36 first half lead after shooting 63 percent (17-27) from the field and 62 percent (5-8) on three pointers in the first 20 minutes of play.
Birmingham Southern, however, answered with a 16-5 run to start the second half. The Panthers second half run began a back and forth contest between the two teams. With three minutes remaining in regulation, Birmingham Southern took a 67-64 lead on a made three-pointer. A
Blake Jones jumper cut the Panthers lead to one, but another quick jumper gave Birmingham Southern a three-point lead with 15 seconds remaining in regulation.
With only seconds remaining,
Quinn Atkinson was fouled on an attempted game tying three-pointer. From there, Atkinson made all three free throws to send the contest into overtime. In overtime, both teams continued the intense game until the Panthers took a four-point lead with 18 seconds left. Holding the late lead, Birmingham Southern made their remaining free throws to secure the victory - and fifth win of the season.
Millsaps did, however, outscore Birmingham Southern in points off turnovers (17-11), bench points (16-9) and points in the paint (38-24). Atkinson led the Majors in scoring with 28 points while
Alex Gerchow finished with 11 and seven rebounds. In scoring totals, the Majors finished 32-64 from the field (50 percent) and 5-15 (46 percent) on three pointers.
The Majors will look to quickly rebound for another game on the road. Next up for the Millsaps Men's Basketball Team is a road matchup with LaGrange College tomorrow, Jan. 4th. Monday's tip off is set for 7:00 pm EST in LaGrange, Georgia.
