Box Score JACKSON, Miss. -- Women's Basketball wins 66-58 over Covenant College (Ga.) to sweep this week's home slate. This game improves the Majors to 7-4 on the season and in non-conference play as conference matchups begin next week.
This game was a tight one throughout, beginning with a close, defensive struggle in the first half. Both teams matched each other's efforts early, with Covenant taking the first quarter 13-12 then Millsaps winning the sceond quarter 12-13 for a tied-up 25-25 game at the half.
Millsaps controlled the game in the second half however, winning the third quarter in another closely fought quarter 18-15 before ultimately separating themselves by double digits in the fourth quarter. A late rally by Covenant and missed free throws by the Majors down the stretch led to the Majors victory only holding on to the victory by eight points.
Individually, Millsaps was led by leading scorer,
Kala-Jewel Freeman with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. She was folowed by another double double from
Kim Klunk with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Brazia Jones joined those two in double digit scoring with 11 points and three assists on an efficient 4-5 shooting from the field.
Braxton Thomas started and put up a solid seven points, five assists and two steals.Megan Donald led all Majors off the bench in three point shooting with nine points on 3-6 shooting from behind the arc.
As a team, the Majors forced 18 turnovers and limited Covenant to only 35.6% shooting from the field, including a game low 27.8% shooting in the deciding fourth quarter. Millsaps out-rebounded Covenant 39-32 and held them to only eight assists on 21 baskets, limiting them to mostly one-on-one play for their two top scorers.
Millsaps will be back in action on Monday, January 2nd in their first conference game of the season against Birmingham-Southern at home at 5 p.m.
