Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Crowned Co-Champs with Seventh Straight Win

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Women's Basketball finished the regular season in the best way possible – by winning their seventh straight game on Senior Day securing a share of the regular season SAA Championship.

Today marked the final game of the regular season for the Majors, as they finish with an overall record of 17-8 and 11-3 in conference play.  Today's victory over Rhodes also continues the longest win streak in the conference at seven games for the Majors.  With the Senior Day festivities, seventh straight victory and conference regular season championship secured, it was a banner day for Millsaps Women's Basketball.

The Majors trailed only once in today's contest, as they held off the comeback effort by Rhodes to win.  Before the game, a special presentation was held to honor and recognize the outstanding careers of three graduating seniors.

Mahalia Crawford, Beverly Holmes and Miah Brooks will all graduate this semester after successful playing careers both on and off the court.  In addition to benefiting the Women's Basketball program and Millsaps Community, all three seniors helped accumulate a 32-1 record at the Hangar Dome in their four years, including two SAA Championship appearances.

With the Senior Day festivities in full swing, the Majors took the court to earn their 17th win of the season.

The Majors' defense again excelled as the Lynx were held to 26% from the field on 17-64 shooting and 18% on three pointers making just 4 of 22.  Holding a seven-point lead at the half, the Majors outscored Rhodes 25-20 in the final 20 minutes of play to earn the win.

Rhodes fought back to make the contest a two-possession game with just over five minutes left in regulation.  The Majors, however, responded by scoring the next five points.

Holding a 49-40 lead with 63 seconds left in the game, Millsaps made their remaining free throws via Beverly Holmes and Miah Brooks to secure the 52-42 win.

The Majors ended the game on a 10-4 run and in doing so, continued their longest win streak of the season at seven games.  Three Majors scored in the double digits as Kala-Jewel Freeman led with 11 points.  Katie Connor and Braxton Thomas both finished with 10 points while Kim Klunk led in rebounds with 10.  Miah Brooks finished close behind with nine rebounds and seven points.

The good news did not stop there either.  With the announcement that Birmingham Southern fell to Hendrix earlier in the day, the Majors were officially named regular season co-champions of the SAA.

Following the Men's game, the nets were cut down to celebrate a remarkable regular season that featured games all over the southeast, to Las Vegas – and most importantly – finished right here at Millsaps College in the Hangar Dome.

The conference tournament, hosted by Birmingham Southern (due to a tiebreaker), will take place next weekend with the Majors as the two seed.  The Southern Athletic Association has announced seeding, as the Majors will face the seventh seeded Sewanee Tigers.

The conference tournament will be a great opportunity to continue a successful regular season for the Majors and also extend the collegiate playing careers of three outstanding seniors.  The times for Friday's quarterfinal tip off against the Tigers will be announced and finalized by the conference soon.
