Jackson, MS – Majors' starting pitcher
Kenny Wright improved to 4-0 on the season pitching six shutout innings as the Millsaps Baseball team earned a conference series sweep over Sewanee.
Sunday's contest marked the third and final game of the series as the Majors improve to 16-13 (9-6). The weekend theme of timely hitting and effective pitching continued on Sunday for Millsaps in the 2-1 victory.
Kenny Wright earns the win pitching six scoreless innings and striking out three batters while
Chris Guerin earns his fourth save of the year. Overall, Millsaps finished the contest with two runs on nine hits and one error.
The Majors struck first with a run in the third.
Logan Patterson got things started with a leadoff single up the middle.
Drew Wray then advanced Patterson to second with a well-placed sacrifice bunt.
With a runner in scoring position,
Isaac Glenn stepped up for an opportune at-bat. Glenn delivered with an RBI single through the left side. Glenn's RBI gave the Majors an early 1-0 lead.
Millsaps then added to the lead in the fifth with another RBI single. This time
Lee Ogletree recorded the RBI to score Wray, giving Millsaps a 2-0 lead. Sewanee, however, answered with a run in the seventh.
Jacob Mardick and the Majors' defense then shut down the Tigers in the eighth, sending the game – and potential first series sweep of the season – to the ninth.
Chris Guerin was called upon to close the game and earn consecutive saves for the first time this year. A fly out to right field got things started, but an error by the Majors put the tying run at first. Guerin, however, was never fazed as a foul out to first and another fly out to right field ended the game.
As the final fly out landed in right fielder
Seth Trulock's glove, the Majors secured their first sweep in conference play. With the game three win, Millsaps Baseball moves to fourth overall in the Southern Athletic Association as well.
Isaac Glenn led the Majors in hits with three while
Drew Wray finished close behind with two. Glenn also recorded an RBI, as did starting catcher
Lee Ogletree. The pitching trio of
Kenny Wright,
Jacob Mardick and
Chris Guerin held the Tigers to just one run on seven hits.
Now at 16-13, the Majors will look to continue the positive momentum with a non-conference matchup later this week. The Millsaps Baseball team will travel to Georgia to face LaGrange at Phil Williamson Stadium.
First pitch against the Panthers from Cleaveland Field is set for Tuesday, April 5th.
