Buck Blanz scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds in Millsaps 74-66 loss to Centenery on day one of the SCAC/SAA Challenge Saturday night.
MIllsaps fell behind 10-4 early in the first half to the Gents. The Majors closed the gap starting with 15:49 left in the first half when
James Turner drew a foul and made a free throw and
Sam Kohnke knocked down a three to make it a two-point game at the 15:12 mark.
Both teams struggled to score for the next five minutes until Grant hit a three, made a layup and converted on a jumper to score seven straight points to give the Majors a 17-16 lead with 8:33 to go in the first half. Each side traded baskets for much of the later part of the first, Kohnke made two straight layups to give the Majors a 29-26 lead with 3:34 to go. But Centenary closed out the half on a 10-1 run to go up 36-30 at halftime.
Blanz scored the first three points for the Majors in the second half and Grant sinked a three to make it a two-point game. After five straight points by the Gents,
Saxton Becker scored the next seven points for Millsaps to bring the score to a 46-44 Centenary lead with 11:27 to go in the game.
Millsaps had their chances down the stretch, a couple made free throws by Grant brought it to a one-point game midway through the second half. Free throws by Blanz made it a three point deficit with 4:34 to go, and a Blanz three pointer with 1:26 to go brought the score to 67-62. But Centenery had enough to hold off the Majors late comeback attempt
Millsaps is now 0-2 early on the season. The Majors are back in action on Sunday for the final day of the SCAC/SAA Challenge where they take on the hosts Austin College. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
