Majors Run Past Blazers 98-68 in Home Opener

JACKSON, Miss. – Four Majors scored in double figures as the Millsaps men's basketball team celebrated their 2017-18 home opener with a 98-68 blowout win over crosstown rival Belhaven Tuesday night.

Junior Michael Sullivan led the Majors with 21 points on 7-9 shooting and 3-4 from beyond the arc, to go along with six rebounds and was tied for a game high five assists. Freshman Tysin Meads had a huge game off the bench with 17 points, five rebounds and five blocked shots in 19 minutes of action. Senior Sam Kohnke and freshman Joshua Miller each finished with 12 points and six rebounds on the night.

Both teams battled early on as Belhaven took a 14-13 lead over the first ten minutes of play. Daniel Coleman got it started for the Majors when he knocked down a three with 10:11 to go to start an 11-0 run that put the Majors on top 24-14 at the 7:34 mark. Millsaps would not give up the lead for the rest of the game.

After Belhaven scored two baskets, Millsaps kept their offense coming, James Turner hit a three and Sullivan followed with a jumper to bring the lead to 29-18 with 5:56 to go in the first. The Majors then closed out the half on a 21-12 run with Sullivan making a three just before the buzzer to take a 50-30 lead at the half.

Millsaps began the second half on a 22-6 run, Miller broke it open with a three and Buck Blanz made a layup. Saxton Becker continued it with a three to give the Majors a 60-34 lead with 15:54 to go in the game. Meads and Sullivan kept it going with back-to-back layups and Kohnke drilled a three with 12:43 to go to bring the Major lead to 72-36. Millsaps would close the game out in the final minutes to get the victory.

The Majors shot 55 percent from the floor for the game. They out-rebounded Belhaven 46-39 and had a total of eight blocked shots on the night.

Millsaps improves to 2-4 on the season. The Majors will take on this very same Belhaven team for their next matchup on Tuesday, December 5th, this time at Belhaven for a 7:30 p.m. start.
