NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite having two players finish with double-doubles and four score in double figures, the Millsaps women's basketball team dropped a nail biter in overtime, 66-62 to Salisbury after leading for most of regulation, Millsaps is now 3-8 on the season.
Junior
Braxton Thomas led the Majors in both scoring and rebounding, totaling 15 points and 12 boards, freshman
Dia Fortenberry also posted a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Sophomore
Megan Donaldson hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points and junior
Rebecca Harris finished with 12 points on 5-7 shooting and four rebounds.
With the game tied at four in the early going of the first, Donaldson's three with 6:28 on the clock gave the Majors a small 7-4 cushion. After a layup by Salisbury, Harris earned herself an and-one opportunity and converted the free throw to make it 10-6 with 3:16 to go in the first. After a small run by Salisbury made it a two point game, Donaldson knocked down another three in the closing minute to give the Majors a 17-14 lead at the end of one.
Millsaps started the second with two straight baskets to take a 21-14 lead with 9:02 on the clock. Salisbury closed the gap with a 6-0 run, but again it was Donaldson who hit a much-needed three and Thomas followed with a layup to make it a 26-19 lead with 6:15 until the half. A run by Salisbury cut it to a three point game but another three by Donaldson in the closing seconds of the half brought it to a 31-25 halftime lead.
Defense was the key in the third, the Majors held Salisbury to just nine points on 17 percent shooting and did not allow a three to fall. Harris scored five points in the quarter and the Majors took a 43-34 heading into the fourth.
Salisbury began the fourth on an 11-5 run to close their gap to just three points (48-45) with four minutes to go in regulation. Millsaps held a 52-47 lead with 1:22 to go, but Salisbury closed out the final minute on a 7-2 run, including a game tying three with 17 seconds left to send it to overtime.
Millsaps was in control in the early going of OT holding onto a 58-56 lead with four minutes to go. A three by Salisbury put them ahead by one and they converted their free throws in the closing minutes to steal the game from the Majors.
The Majors resume their season on Tuesday, January 2nd when they begin conference play at Birmingham Southern at 1:00 p.m.
