JACKSON, Miss. (Mar. 21, 2017) – In the rubber game of the Cowboy Maloney Series between the Millsaps College and Belhaven University baseball teams, it was the Majors that came away with the victory, blanking their local rival, 10-0 to keep the Cowboy Maloney trophy on the Millsaps campus. Junior
Kenny Wright (Louisville, Miss.) pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing just four hits to the Blazers.
Millsaps (10-12) scored a pair of runs in the second to open the scoring. Senior
Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.) led off with a triple and then scored on an infield error. Junior
Chase Callaway (Brandon, Miss.), who reached on the error, then later scored when a fly to right was misplayed.
Two runs on one hit was again the recipe for the Majors in the third when an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore
Jimmy Fondren (Pascagoula, Miss.) and a wild pitch accounted for Millsaps upping its advantage to 4-0.
That was more than enough for Wright, who retired the first 10 batters he faced. The only threat by Belhaven (12-9) came in the sixth when the Blazers used an infield single and a walk that led to runners on second and third with two down. Wright kept the shutout intact, getting the next hitter to ground out to second to end the threat.
By then Millsaps had already built a 6-0 lead thanks to a two-run single in the fifth by senior
Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.). The Majors then put it away in the seventh when they drew a pair of walks and picked up a single off of relief pitcher Rob Felton to load the bases. Felton came back to record a pair of strikeouts, but a wild pitch and another error, the fifth of the game for the Blazers, opened the door for four more runs to score.
Ogletree and junior
Andy Page (Warrenton, Va.) each had a pair of hits for Millsaps, with Ogletree leading the team with his two RBI. Wright improved to 2-1 with his performance, striking out four in his seven innings of work.
Millsaps will return to Southern Athletic Association action this weekend when it hosts Centre College for a three-game series. The first two games will be a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. at Twenty Field.
