Millsaps Outslugs Centre, 12-2

JACKSON, Miss. (Mar. 25, 2017) – After waiting out an hour and 45-minute lightning delay in the second inning, Millsaps College erupted for seven runs and went on to take a 12-2 win over Centre College in the final game of a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) baseball series. The Majors swatted three home runs in the game, including a pair from junior Chase Callaway (Brandon, Miss.).

Millsaps (11-14, 2-6 SAA) scored one run in the bottom of the first when, with two away and runners on first and third, the Majors attempted a double steal. The runner at second was thrown out, but not before sophomore Brennan Ducote (Lafayette, La.) crossed the plate with the first run of the game.

Junior Kenny Wright (Louisville, Miss.) started for Millsaps and went four strong innings to pick up the victory. He gave up two singles to start the game, but stranded the runners on second and third by getting a foul out and a strikeout. He only gave up two more hits in his final three innings as he improved to 3-1.

In the bottom of the second lightning in the area started the long delay and when it was over Millsaps found lightning in its bats as it loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a walk.  Junior Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.) was then hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the inning. Senior Logan Patterson (Hopkinsville, Ky.) followed with a sac fly before junior Andy Page (Warrenton, Va.) delivered an RBI single to make it 4-0. Sophomore Jimmy Fondren (Pascagoula, Miss.) then stroked a two-run double before senior Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.) capped the inning with a two-run home run to right center, making it 8-0.

Millsaps added another run in the third when Callaway hit the first of his shots leading off. Centre (13-8, 4-5 SAA) put its two runs on the board in the fifth when the Colonels loaded the bases on a double and a pair of walks. With two away a pick-off throw to first was wide of the mark, allowing two runners to score. The Majors answered the two Centre runs in the bottom half of the inning when Callaway launched his second shot of the game, making it 11-2.

In the seventh Millsaps loaded the bases with no outs for senior Logan Patterson (Hopkinsville, Ky.) who singled to right to score Callaway, invoking the 10-run rule and ending the contest.

Callaway had a 3-for-3 day, driving in three and scoring four times. Fondren, Patterson and Ogletree all drove in a pair of runs for the Majors. Will Kirk and Drew Schacht each had a pair of hits to lead Centre.

After Wright, junior Daniel Adams (Union Springs, Ala.) struck out four in two innings, giving up the two unearned Centre runs. Senior Zack Borne (Foley, Ala.) threw one inning for the Majors, giving up one hit. Nick Hoffman started for the Colonels and was the victim of the big second inning and finished surrendering eight runs on six hits in 1.2 innings to take the loss.

Millsaps will step out of conference play for its next game, hosting the University of Texas-Tyler on Tuesday, March 28. First pitch at Twenty Field will take place at 4:00 p.m.
