Millsaps Drops Doubleheader to Hendrix

JACKSON, Miss. (Apr. 1, 2017) – After taking early leads in both games of a Southern Athletic Association baseball doubleheader, the Millsaps College baseball team saw them slip away each time as Hendrix College came back to win each to claim the sweep. The Warriors took game one, 8-6, and then game two, 8-2, to take the series.

Game 1

Millsaps (12-17, 3-8 SAA) got off to a good start in the first game of the twin bill, scoring runs in each of the first three innings. A double and hit batter put two on in the first for senior Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.), who doubled to center to plate both runs. The Majors added a run in the second on a leadoff home run by sophomore Connor Woodall (Madison, Miss.) and then pushed two more across in the third on RBI singles by Woodall and senior Logan Patterson (Pensacola, Fla.).

After scoring a run in the third, Hendrix (11-17, 5-7 SAA) tied it up with four in the fifth. The Warriors opened the inning by loading the bases for Matthew Lillard who delivered a two-run double to make it 5-3. A sac fly made it a one-run game before Lillard scored to tie it up on a double by Wyatt Hogan.

Hendrix took the lead in the seventh on a bases-loaded single by James Martin that scored two to make it 7-5. The Warriors then added another run in the eighth to make it 8-5.

After the first three innings the Millsaps offense struggled to score. The Majors loaded the bases on three walks in the sixth and had runners aboard in every inning after, but could only come up with an unearned run in the ninth that scored on a fielding error.

Woodall and Patterson each had three hits in the game for Millsaps, with Lillard also getting three hits while driving in four runs for Hendrix.

Game 2

Millsaps scored first in the second game as well, loading the bases on a double by senior Seth Trulock (Taylorsville, Ill.) and a pair of walks. With two down a passed ball allowed Trulock to come in with the first run of the contest.

After Millsaps scored in the first, Hendrix answered with four runs that would prove to be enough. With runners on second and third and one away, Jake Wiegand tied the game with a sac fly. Later Jorge Leon capped the scoring with a two-run double that put Hendrix up 4-1.

Both teams scored in the third, with Hendrix getting its run across on an RBI single by Wiegand and Millsaps answering with an RBI single by sophomore Brennan Ducote (Lafayette, La.). The Warriors came right back with three in the fourth to take control, with two scoring on a home run to left by Hogan.

Hendrix starter, Colin Brown, kept the Millsaps bats quiet, as he went all the way for the Warriors, finishing with a seven-inning complete game, giving up three hits and two runs in picking up the victory. Hogan had a 3-for-4 day at the plate for the Warriors, driving in four runs.

Millsaps will play its final non-conference game of the season next Tuesday when it travels to the University of Texas at Tyler for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
