MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Apr. 30, 2017) – In a game that stretched over two days, Millsaps College scored seven runs in the eighth inning to pull away from Hendrix College and take an 11-5 win in the 2017 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Baseball Tournament. The contest started last night at USA Stadium in Milligan, Tennessee and was suspended after four innings due to poor weather conditions and resumed this afternoon at Rhodes.
In the half of the game played last night it was a pitching dual between both teams as they combined for just four hits, with four Millsaps pitchers holding Hendrix to just one of those hits. When play resumed this afternoon it was another story as both squads scored in their first at bat. The Majors picked up an RBI single from junior
Wes Lassere (Thibodaux, La.), with the Warriors countering with three runs on a run scoring single by Wyatt Hogan and a double by Matthew Lillard that scored a pair.
Millsaps cut it to a run in the seventh on an RBI double by junior
Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.) before putting the game away with its big rally in the eighth. The Majors started the inning by loading the bases on a pair of hit batters and a walk. Senior
Logan Patterson (Pensacola, Fla.) drew another walk to tie the game before a balk call gave Millsaps the lead, 4-3. Another hit batter loaded the bases again for Breland, who singled to left to bring in two. Sophomore
Connor Woodall (Madison, Miss.) and Lassere then followed with RBI singles to make it 8-3. Another bases loaded walk later in the inning capped the scoring for the Majors.
Hendrix got two back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by Josh Walker, but it was not enough as Millsaps scored twice in the eighth to ice it. Junior
John Wiltshire (Chantilly, Va.) picked up his second win in as many days, throwing the seventh and eighth innings, with senior
Daniel Gallarno (Jackson, Miss.) setting down the Warriors in order in the ninth.
Due to an agreement that the tournament would not be played past Sunday, the Millsaps – Hendrix game was the last to be played. With a 2-0 record in the series, Rhodes College will advance to the SAA Championship series net weekend, with the Majors season coming to a close.
