JACKSON, Miss. (Apr. 9, 2017) – Trailing by a run going into the bottom of the ninth, the Millsaps College baseball team came up with another dramatic finish, scoring twice to record its third straight walk-off win over Oglethorpe University in Southern Athletic Association action. Both runs scored on a bunt single by junior
Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.), giving the Majors a sweep of the series.
Millsaps (15-18, 6-8 SAA) started the ninth when junior
Wes Lassere (Thibodaux, La.) was hit by a pitch leading off. A pair of wild pitches put him on third before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Oglethorpe (16-14, 6-9 SAA) saw Justin Thigpen record a strikeout, but Breland followed with his bunt back to the pitcher. Senior
Zach Borne (Denham Springs, Ala.), who had come in as a pinch runner, easily scored on the play, but junior
Patrick Grumbley (Foley, Ala.), who had pinch ran at second, never stopped. His turn towards home froze the Stormy Petrel defense momentarily, and it was enough for him to slide under the tag at home with the winning run.
That made a winner out of junior
John Wiltshire (Chantilly, Va.), who threw the final four innings for Millsaps, allowing just an unearned run on a pair of hits.
Millsaps took an early lead in the contest when senior
Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.) led off the second inning with a home run to right center, but the lead was short lived as Oglethorpe came back with three in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run home run by Adrian Celata.
Millsaps came right back to tie the game in its half of the third, with Ogletree again providing the runs, swatting a two-run double to tie it up. The Majors then took the lead on a two-out RBI single by senior
Logan Patterson (Pensacola, Fla.) in the fourth.
In the sixth Oglethorpe jumped back on top with another three-run inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Majors that led to two runs. Celata then added a sac fly and the Stormy Petrels held a 6-4 lead. Millsaps crept back within one in its half of the inning when Patterson reached third on a hit and a ground out. Sophomore
Connor Woodall (Madison, Miss.) was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with two away. He then attempted to steal but was caught in a run down, but avoided being tagged out long enough for Patterson to score.
From there Wiltshire held the Stormy Petrels in check, allowing just an infield hit over the final three innings and setting up another dramatic finish.
Millsaps will open its final home series of the season on Friday when the Majors will play host to Birmingham-Southern College, the top team in the SAA and currently ranked No. 3 in the nation. The two teams will open the three-game set with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m. at Twenty Field.
