Women’s Basketball Withstands Berry on the Road

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – In the second meeting between the teams this season, the Millsaps women's basketball team completed the regular season sweep of Berry, defeating the Vikings 76-69 Sunday afternoon. Millsaps moved into fifth place in the SAA standings with a 4-5 conference record and is now 7-13 on the season, while Berry falls to 8-11 overall and 3-6 in the SAA.

Freshman Dia Fortenberry led the Majors off the bench with 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sophomore Millicent Butler came away with 14 points and a team high four assists, while junior Rebecca Harris and sophomore Anna Wilson each finished with 11 points, Wilson added nine rebounds.

After Berry broke out to a 17-12 lead with 1:49 left in the first, Taelor Manning hit a big three pointer to pull the Majors to within two. Millsaps locked down on defense, not allowing the Vikings to score for the rest of the quarter. Three free throws from Fortenberry closed out the first on a 6-0 run, giving the Majors an 18-17 lead at the end of one.

Butler and Megan Donaldson hit consecutive threes to begin the second, giving Millsaps a 24-17 lead early in the quarter. A quick 5-0 run by Berry brought it to a two-point game, but a basket by Butler and a three from Harris extended the Majors lead to 29-22 with 6:56 until halftime. The Vikings closed the half on a 9-3 run to make the halftime score 32-31 with Millsaps on top.

Millsaps had their biggest scoring margin in the third quarter, outscoring Berry by four points. The Majors broke out to an 11-6 run to bring the lead to 43-37 with 6:08 left in the third. Both teams then traded baskets to finish the quarter and the Majors held onto a 53-48 lead heading into the fourth.

Berry started the fourth on a 9-4 run to tie the game at 57 with 5:59 left. Fortenberry's and-one shortly after gave the Majors the lead for good and Butler's three with 2:29 left was the dagger to put the game away as Millsaps closed it out on a 13-8 to take the tough road win.

Millsaps returns to the Hangar Dome for its next contest against Sewanee on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
