Volleyball Drops Hard Fought Match to End 2018 Season

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.—The Millsaps volleyball team came into Friday night's SAA quarterfinal match against Hendrix riding a high.

The Majors had won 3 straight and were feeling good about the way they were playing. But despite playing well Friday night, it just wasn't enough as the third-seeded Warriors knocked off the sixth-seeded Majors 3-0 to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

How It Happened

Set 1

The two teams traded point back and forth until late in the first set. But with the set tied at 18, Hendrix reeled off 6 straight points. A Morgan Vincent kill ended the Warriors run but by then it was too late. Hendrix used an Allison Long kill to take the set, 25-19.

Set 2

Hendrix came out on fire in the second set, jumping ahead 5-0 before a McKenzi Petricko kill got the Majors on the board. The Warriors built their lead to 13-5, and eventually, 21-15 in what looked like a runaway set for Hendrix. But the Majors resiliency shown and they went on an 8-2 run, highlighted by kills from Vincent, Emily Herring, a block from Vincent and Petricko and aces from Payton Passantino and Kayleigh Aicklen, to tie the match at 23 and force a Warrior timeout. Another Passantino ace put the Majors at set point but the Warriors used an error and a kill to take a 2-0 lead, 26-24.

Set 3

The Majors jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in set 3, thanks to a Petricko kill, a Gracie Bellnap ace and kills from Bennett and Cailey Ness. That lead would be short lived, however, as Hendrix would battle back and tie the match at 6 before putting the Majors away with a 9-2 run. Millsaps would pull within 5 at 23-18 and 24-19, but Hendrix would end the set on the very next point and end the Majors season at 10-16.

The Majors were led by Petricko's 11 kills followed by Bennett with 10 to go along with her 9 digs. Bellnap, who played in her final game for the Majors, led the way with 18 assists. Defensively, Ness and Vincent each had 3 blocks while Passantino was tops with 19 digs.
