Women’s Basketball Ends Thanksgiving with a Pair of Weekend Games

After you've filled up on turkey and pumpkin pie, head over to the Hangar Dome for your post-meal entertainment. The Millsaps women's basketball team will welcome Howard Payne University for a 3 pm contest on Saturday before taking on LeTourneau at 3 pm on Sunday. 
 
Last Week
 
The Majors kicked off the 2018-19 season on last Tuesday against rival Belhaven. Despite the Blazers leading for the majority of the game, Millsaps tied it up with 3 seconds left on a pair of Anna Wilson free throws to send the game to overtime. The Majors dominated the overtime period to kick the season off with a win. 
 
Saturday and Sunday, Millsaps headed to Arkansas for the SAA/SCAC Challenge. They faced off against Austin College on Saturday. Megan Donaldson led the way for the Majors, dropping 12 points, but Millsaps dropped the game 77-59. 
 
Millsaps rebounded Sunday with a convincing 72-53 win over Centenary, which included a first half that saw the Majors outscore the Ladies 40-18. Wilson once again led the way, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Morgan McCrea and Millicent Butler added 14 and 10, respectively, to help the Majors move to 2-1 to start the season. 
 
This Week
 
Howard Payne University (1-3, 0-0 ASC) 
 
The Yellow Jackets come into Saturday's game with the Majors having dropped 3 of their first 4 games to start the season. They dropped a 33-point decision to Houston Baptist on Wednesday before heading to Jackson.  
 
 Key Players for HPU
  • Chelsey Harris-The sophomore is the only player to score in double figures all three games for the Yellow Jackets. After dropping 17 against Austin College to start the season, she responded with 12 and 11, respectively, for an average of 13.3 PPG. She also adds 5 RPG to go along with her points. 
  • Caprica Brooks-Brooks is a defensive force of HPU, adding 10 steals for the Yellow Jackets so far this season. 
 Millsaps and Howard Payne last met in 2015 with the Majors coming away with a 63-62 win at the Hangar Dome. 
 
LeTourneau University (1-1, 0-0 ASC)
 
The Yellow Jackets come into Sunday's matchup at .500. They started the season with a win over Schreiner University before falling to Texas Lutheran in overtime. 
 
Key Players for LU 
  • Alexandria Thorne-Thorne had just 9 points in the win over Schreiner but bounced back with 19 against Texas Lutheran. She was 5-7 from behind the line against TLU. 
  • Keauna Whitfield-The sophomore is a presence down low, grabbing a team high 14 rebounds in the Yellow Jacket's two games this year. 
  • Jaila Leaven/Sha'Donnaver Young-Leaven and Young are second and third on the Yellow Jacket's in PPG, with both averaging double figures. Leaven averages 12.5 PPG while Young adds 11.5 PPG. 
The Majors and Yellow Jackets met in the Majors Thanksgiving Classic last season with LeTourneau coming away with a 70-63 win.
